Sex Work and Sexual Violence
By Melissa
Many people think that sex work is easy and effortless, believing that sex workers can simply "lie back" and earn money. However, they often overlook the risks and dangers that sex workers face, particularly the issue of sexual violence.
Throughout a sex worker's career, it is common for them to encounter sexual violence at least once. Some clients, thinking that because they've paid, act like "gods" who can treat sex workers' bodies however they want, using force and aggression. In fact, sex workers are providing a "service," not selling their bodies. Just because someone pays, it doesn't mean he can do whatever he wants. Unfortunately, due to power imbalances or a "let it go" mentality, many instances of sexual violence go unresolved and unreported.
Additionally, some unscrupulous clients may remove condoms during sex without consent, violating the agreement and the sex worker's autonomy. These clients often flee afterward, aware of their wrongdoing, leaving the workers unable to hold them accountable, forcing them to silently endure this injustice.
Beyond these forms of sexual violence, sex workers also face a variety of other dangers, such as robbery, harassment through hidden cameras, and clients who refuse to pay. As a result, the reality of sex work is far more difficult and dangerous than most people imagine. Sadly, these hidden risks and crises are rarely addressed or acknowledged by society.
