Take Good Care of Your Mind, Body & Soul
Lok Lok, now in her 40s and a mother of two
daughters, is currently taking a break from work. She once became addicted to
methamphetamine due to influence from friends, work stress, and the
misconception that it would help her lose weight. Her addiction led to imprisonment
for drug possession. During her time in prison, she successfully underwent drug
rehabilitation. The love and care from her family moved her deeply and led her
to reflect on her life choices.
Upon release, a friend introduced her to construction
work. The job was grueling, and a friend suggested that using drugs would boost
her energy and strength, leading her to relapse. However, recalling the love
her family showed during her imprisonment, she decided to leave the
construction job and distance herself from friends who used drugs. "I
don't use drugs anymore, and I rarely contact those friends. When you're with
them, you never know if they have drugs on them, and I don't want to be
misunderstood."
She later worked in a nightclub, where she
learned about AFRO through free HIV/STI testing services. Although she
initially didn't participate in the various free leisure activities due to work
commitments, she began to engage more as she had more free time. She found
these activities interesting and beneficial, leading her to become an active
participant. "I really think AFRO's services are great. I've recommended
them to my friends, but they often decline due to work. The participants all share
similar backgrounds. There is no need to be cautious or feel uneasy. It's a
comfortable environment where we can speak freely."
She particularly enjoys exercise but admits to
being lazy and sensitive to heat. The air-conditioned environment and the
presence of an instructor make the activities enjoyable for her. She has
participated in both yoga and Muay Thai classes, though she found Muay Thai too
intense for her age. On the other hand, she finds yoga physically beneficial,
and helpful for practicing breathing techniques and improving sleep, making her
a regular attendee.
Starting yoga with no prior knowledge, she
approached it with an open mind. Although she still struggles with some poses,
she appreciates the challenge and personal growth it brings. She is grateful
for the instructor's dedicated teaching and guidance, which has helped her
understand yoga better. "During the sound therapy relaxation stretch in
the final class, closing my eyes and listening to the music with the teacher's
guidance made me feel like I was floating, very relaxed and comfortable."
She encourages others to take good care of their mind, body and soul, hoping
they can find balance in their busy lives, not just chasing financial gain but
also nurturing their inner well-being.
Lok Lok's story is both heartwarming and
inspiring. She has faced numerous challenges and difficulties, but with her
family's love, she overcame her addiction and rediscovered her purpose and
value. Through the services provided by AFRO, she rebuilt her social circle and
found activities that benefit her physical and mental health.
