Stress and Fear
Our first encounter with Man-Man was filled with smiles and gratitude, as she repeatedly thanked us for travelling all the way to one-sex worker apartments and providing services to the fellow sisters there. She always wore smile and spoke cheerfully whenever she visited AFRO. As COVID-19 prevailed and adversely affected her career and financial situation, Man-Man had to change her working pattern to make a living. She resorted to searching for clients via advertisements and providing sexual service at hotels. Her optimistic and proactive attitude helps her pull through her struggles and seek opportunities amid uncertainties.
Man-Man's strategy of overcoming the post-COVID economic setbacks by switching to a working environment was quite successful. By promoting herself online, shortlisting clients, and choosing comfortable hotels with reasonable prices, she managed to maintain a stable income. Yet, over the year when she conducted sex work at hotels, she encountered clients who turned out to be thieves and robbers. She even attracted the attention of gangsters, who came to the hotel disguised as a client to threaten her that she could no longer stay in Hong Kong if she continued her work here. These incidents put her on pins and needles. Even at late-night after work, she would suddenly tremble in fear and be unable to sleep for a few consecutive weeks, which triggered other health issues. The prolonged negative emotions and stress changed Man-Man drastically. She no longer smiled and frowned all day long instead, she was also diagnosed with anxiety disorder.
Unlike many others who are mentally unwell, Man-Man accepted the idea of visiting a psychiatrist. She trusted her doctor and began receiving psychiatric medical treatments and opening up herself during counselling sessions. After around half a year, Man-Man’s insomnia and anxiety symptoms gradually reduced. She has restored balance in her daily life and put a smile on her face again.
It takes immense courage to work in Man-Man’s working environment, and it takes even more courage to accept her diagnosis. Man-Man’s courage radiates a kind of energy in life, precisely the optimistic attitude and what we need in our own lives.
